Board of Directors Meeting
Monday, November 15, 2004, 7:30 p.m.
The Board of Directors of
Kutztown Area School District met for the regular board meeting on Monday,
November 15, 2004 at 7:30 p.m., in the library of the Senior High School
pursuant to due notice to board members and the public.

Welcome President
Vymazal welcomed guests and opened the meeting with a moment of silence
and
Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
He asked that everyone signs the attendance book and marks their concern
next to their name. He requested
that anyone wishing to speak on an agenda item please raise his/her hand to be
recognized. The meeting was tape recorded.

Superintendent’s National
Education Week is happening this week. Opportunities for parents to
Report observe in classrooms on Tuesday and Thursday.
Ø
Veterans Day assemblies
were held in each building. At the middle school, veterans brought pictures and
their own stories to very inquisitive and intrigued students.
Ø
High School Musical –
“Anything Goes” will be held this weekend. Wednesday evening is senior citizens
night at no cost.
Ø
Nutrition article
enclosed in the packet recognizes Sheryl Snyder, Director of Food Service for a
change in snacks served in the district.
Ø
Act 72 – BCIU mailed out
132,000 homestead applications. Thirty percent were returned. Neighboring
counties report a 26%-56% return rate. A second mailing will go out in December
to those property owners whose applications were not returned to date.
Ø
Bus accident occurred
Tuesday, November 9th at 222 and Grim Road in Upper Macungie
Township, Trexlertown. Thirty students and four adults were involved. Dr.
Winkler noted that a series of good decisions were made that kept the students
safe. The district is currently working with parents on insurance issues. She
acknowledged over 15 volunteer organizations and publicly thanked emergency
responders, including Nick Lazo, Barb Richard, and hospital personnel. Lorraine
Felker, Lou Cottone and middle school and district office staff are to be
commended for manning the phones and handling the emergency from the district
buildings. Thanks to the emergency management team for coordinating emergency
efforts and staging area at the Macungie Township Building. Dr. Winkler, with
the support of neighbors at the accident site, continues to speak to PennDot
regarding a traffic light being needed ASAP at that intersection.

last month. Currently in early bird negotiations with teachers. County schools
Jim Kramer are split on the decision of teaching
social studies and math next year. KASD
prefers
to keep them in our building for those subjects. Meet next in December.

Policy & Curriculum
Meeting held 10/25. Scholarship management for district to be

handled by the KASD Education Foundation. Credit for students in band
was
discussed but did not get approval of
the committee. Committee agreed to ban
participation
of KASD students in events to be held at the Central Catholic HS gym.
Personnel Motion made by Carl Ziegler, seconded by James
Kramer, to approve the following personnel items:
1. Approval of the child rearing and family
medical leave for Karen Austin commencing on May 9, 2005 or the expiration of
approved, applicable sick leave. Ms. Austin’s absence is planned from March 14,
2005 through June 1, 2005.
2. Acceptance of the resignation of Brenda
Herber, cafeteria worker, effective December 31, 2004.
3. Approval of Carol Fairchild as substitute
aide and substitute nurse’s aide effective November 16, 2004 for School Year 2004-2005
at the current substitute aide rate.
4. Approval of the following individuals as
substitute teachers effective November 16, 2004 for School Year 2004-2005 at
the current substitute teacher rate:

Management future Kutztown Area School District scholarships be
hereafter administered by the KASD
Education Foundation, Inc. adhering to previously
specified guidelines and wishes of future donors. Scholarship award decisions
will continue to be made by the District.
