Kutztown Area School District met for the regular board meeting on Monday, May
20, 2002 at 7:30 p.m., in the library of the Senior High School pursuant to due
notice to board members and the public.

Welcome President
Vymazal welcomed guests and opened the meeting with a
moment
of silence and Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. He asked that everyone signs the attendance book and marks
their concern next to their name.
He requested that anyone wishing to speak on an agenda item please raise
his/her hand to be recognized.
SuptÕs Many students and parents are here tonight to honor
the accomplishments of three groups of
Report talented
students. We are honoring a total of 63 students.
Senior high school mock trial team
Lisa Saby is the advisor for the Berks County mock
trial team. The team argued a hypothetical case against Fleetwood SD in front
of an actual judge in the Reading courthouse to win the Berks County
Championship. Atty. OÕKeefe was their legal advisor and quoted fellow lawyers
and judges by saying ÒOutstandingÉUnbelievableÉCan you get some of these kids
to talk to some of the lawyers in my courtroom!Ó Kutztown students showed
professionalism and class and are a great asset to the school and community.

Daniels, Melina Forte, and Keri Overcast.
PA-TSA State Participants
Matt Cullen and Dave Kenney gave an overview of the
awards won by TSA members at the State competition. We had a wonderful showing
and representation at the state level. All these students won at the regional
level and were invited to the State competition. The students won in individual
and team events. The KASD State middle school team members are:

Ziegler, Josiah Meck, Zack Owen, Darrin Scott, Matt Finke, Alex Alkons, Colton
Ziegler, Brent Koller, Matt Loch, Matt Esser, Jesse Heffner, Cody Luckenbill,
Addison Meitzler, Stefan Wert, Austin Rothermell, Dean Pugliese, Cory Booz.
The KASD high school members are:
Ann Alkons, Lisa Augustine, Matt Gately, Becca Ache,
Steve Kenney, Brett Kline, Chris Kohl, Adam Hall, Nate Mohler, Scott Saul,

National History Day - State Participants
Matt Smith, Betty Imboden and Tom Campbell gave an
overview of National History Day state competition. These students did a
fantastic job on their individual and team projects. The advisors introduced
all the students and gave a brief explanation of each project. The students
were commended by the effort and unwavering commitment to their projects. Also,
thanks to the parents for their support. The middle school team members are:
Julia Shaw, Stacy Klinger, Samantha Laros, Sarah
Haas, Audrey Foster, Beverly Merkel, Rebecca Stump, Rebecca Peters, Kara Smith,
Seth DeLong, Patrick Usher, and Ethan Hall
The high school team members are:
Amy Miller, Laura Button, Megan Whitner, Adam Hall,
Demarchlier Pukanecz, Arielle Pukanecz, Casey Weaknecht, and Maria Alaimo.
Dr. Winkler also acknowledged two outstanding
students for being named Berks Best by the Reading Eagle Company. Jessica
Hoppes won for Vocational/Technical Skills and Elana Schlenker for
Communication. Jessica and Elana were featured in a special edition of the
newspaper. Kutztown had two winners out of the eight possible for all of Berks
County. What a fantastic accomplishment! Congratulations.
Dr. Winkler went on to commend the students and music
department for a wonderful spring concert. All that attended were sure to have
enjoyed the event.

Preliminary student numbers for next year were available.
Update on Fast ForWord. KASD was chosen to
participate in teacher testing program by the state at the November 15th
In-Service Day. List of professional staff was approved for the Summer Academy.

KASD Kutztown
Area School District tentative operating budget totaling $19,254,643.00 with a
Tentative millage of 20.44 (an increase of .5)
Budget
Adoption Motion made by Carl Ziegler, seconded by Dennis
Ritter, to amend the previous
motion thereby changing the millage rate from 20.44
to 20.92 (an increase of .98). This increase in millage reduces the use of
ending balance from $341,509 to $61,355. The total tentative operating budget
remains at $19,254,643.
