Good afternoon Kutztown Area School District,
Last evening, the Kutztown Area School Board of Directors approved the KASD Phased Reopening Health and Safety Plan including an updated school calendar with the first day for students, August 31, 2020. This document and plan reflect the hard work, extensive research, tough decision making, and input made by our teachers, students, staff, parents, administrative team, and Board members. All resources for the plan can be found here.
It is a comprehensive plan guided by clear principles:
- Health and safety for students and staff - our plan invests our resources and time to utilize and enact the best research-based mitigation strategies to keep students and staff safe.
- Provide an excellent educational experience - this is the core mission of our organization.
- Academic, social, and emotional needs of students - we know that the challenges and stresses of new routines are real for us and we will work as a school community to support all students, families and staff.
- Flexible options - the need to provide choice to families is essential as well as the ability to alter our program as the community context dictates while maintaining educational excellence.
We ask that you review the Re-Entry plan and the various instructional delivery options. We recognize that this is a complicated, emotional, and personal issue with answers that are not easy. We are grateful that you understand that the unique circumstances surrounding the reopening of schools require us to examine all options and forge ahead with a plan that, along with community support, can keep our community safe and provide our students the education they need and deserve. We hope that you will receive our planning as our best effort to provide multiple options to meet the needs of our children, community and staff.
At this time we are asking that all families entering grades 1-12 to complete a registration form (linked below) to indicate your desired instructional delivery model for each child to begin the 2020-2021 school year. Our KASD Virtual Learning option for 2020-2021 will include live synchronous instruction daily for all students with KASD teachers and the KASD curriculum. We are asking that all families who select the Virtual Learning option do so with a commitment for the trimester for elementary students and 1st 9 week grading quarter for secondary students. If you are interested in a virtual option that does not include daily live classes and even greater flexibility, please contact Dr. Edward Myers, Director of Educational Technology, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
As a community, we will continue to meet the challenges of COVID-19 and support our students and each other. Our students deserve the opportunity to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Together we can do so in a safe manner.
Thank you for your support,
Christian Temchatin, Superintendent of Schools
