February 28, 2020 Update

  • February 28, 2020

    Good afternoon,

The purpose of this communication is to update our community on the Coronavirus which has received widespread media attention in recent days. Kutztown Area School District (KASD) does not have a confirmed case of the Coronavirus. If this were to occur, we would notify staff and parents/guardians within the school upon confirmation. Recent statements from the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) have asked schools to prepare for the possibility of the virus spreading. As such, KASD is taking the following precautions.

Throughout flu season it is advisable that everyone in our school community adheres to the following preventative measures, as recommended by the PA Department of Health:

    • Cover coughs or sneezes with your elbow. Do not use your hands!
    • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
    • Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones, remotes, and other frequently touched items.
    • If your child is sick and running a fever, defined as a temperature greater than or equal to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, please keep them out of school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications.

In addition to typical efforts to maintain clean and healthy schools, our school nurses carefully monitor our students for symptoms. Additional precautionary measures are being implemented, as follows:

Regular disinfection of high volume contact and public areas (door handles, desks, phones, counters, water fountains, bus seats, etc.)
Increase in the availability of hand sanitizer.
Flyers posted throughout public areas and restrooms about how to stop the spread of germs.

The Kutztown Area School District will continue to follow the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health updates and recommendations regarding the containment of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19.) The health, safety, and welfare of our students, faculty, and staff are of utmost importance to us. We continue to follow district procedures by maintaining our facilities using EPA registered institutional disinfecting materials. We will track and follow all virus updates and comply with any additional recommendations provided to the district from local, state, or federal health officials.

As always, if you have any concerns regarding your child’s health, it is recommended that you consult with your child’s primary care physician. While no increase in related symptoms has been observed within our School District, if a regional outbreak or a significant number of cases would occur, Kutztown Area School District Officials will adhere to PA Department of Health and/or the Governor’s Office advice and direction and consult with local Emergency Management professionals. We have provided numerous resources on the KASD website for your reference. KASD Elementary Health Services or KASD Secondary Health Services

Thank you for working together with us to see that accurate information is shared and preventative steps are taken. Together we will navigate this concern. The health and safety of our students and staff are of the utmost importance to all of us in KASD.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the health services office at your school.
