August 1, 2019
Dear Parent/Guardian and Student,
Welcome to Kutztown Area High School’s 2019-2020 school year. We are excited about the many great opportunities that exist for our students. We look forward to working with you as we continue to build upon our school’s excellent work ethic and reputation, which embodies the spirit of the Kutztown community. The future is bright, and the class of 2020 will lead the school with its own new and exciting initiatives. We’d like to thank you for your continued support and vision as a community that is excited about education. For information regarding school news and upcoming events, please go to www.kasd.org and click on the high school page, while referring to “Building Calendar for High School.” In addition, please review and consider the following:
Laptop Distribution
Since laptops are thoroughly integrated into most courses, we would like our students to receive laptops as soon as possible. Laptop pick-up dates, times, and location for all high school students are as follows:
High School Library
August 13th, 14th, 15th 12:00pm - 6:00pm
August 19th 9:00am - 2:00pm
Please:
* Remember to bring the signed laptop signature sheet along with you. No laptop may be issued without it.
* Understand that any student still owing an obligation will not be issued a laptop until the obligation has been met. If you are unsure if your child has an outstanding obligation, please call the main office at 610-683-7346.
Student Schedules
Please look over the enclosed schedule. Student requests were considered when building the master schedule. However, core requirements take priority over non-core subjects in scheduling students. Any schedule change requests must be made prior to the start of school. Changes must follow the drop/add procedures found in the Kutztown Area High School’s Course Selection Guide (posted on the building website.) The guidance counselors will be available to resolve scheduling concerns on August 13th from 9:00am to 12:00pm and 4:00pm to 6:00pm in the High School Cafeteria. Your schedule does not include a “Connections” assignment (please see below) or Academic Support. Each student will receive a new schedule on the first day of school that contains these items.
Schedule Changes
Pyramid will now be called “Connections.” Connections is a 34-minute advisory period that will take place 3 days per cycle (A,C,E days of the 6-day cycle).
BCTC students will be departing from the High School at 7:35 am.
Homeroom Attendance
All students are expected to be in their assigned homeroom by 7:45am. The building opens at 7:00am in the cafeteria lobby. Any student who is not in their homeroom by 7:45am will be marked absent. All tardy students must report to the high school office before entering their classroom.
Student Handbook
We look forward to another successful school year and partnering with you to ensure your child’s success. Please read the student handbook, which will soon be posted on our school’s website, for details regarding our school’s policies and procedures.
Personal Item Drop-offs
In promoting responsibility, which is a very important skill for our students to develop, we strongly urge all students to remember to bring their pertinent items to school on a daily basis. We thank you for reinforcing this concept and practice while refraining from dropping off items at the high school. While emergency situations and special circumstances do arise, meeting the expectations of order and responsibility will promote positive qualities for our school and our students.
New Staff
We are excited to welcome the following new staff members to KAHS. Our faculty now includes: Ms. Cecily Ryan, Choral Director and Mrs. Victoria Brown, Agriculture Teacher. We are in the process of hiring teachers for Technology Education and Social Studies, and are working to fill a temporary Math position. We look forward to completing the process very soon and adding these key individuals before the beginning of the school year.
Once again, thank you for your involvement and support of the Kutztown Area School District. We wish everyone an outstanding 2019-2020 school year!
Sincerely,
Barry P. Flicker Edward L. Myers
