Online Educational Resources & Privacy
With our emphasis on providing students with robust resources that enhance their learning, students will be using a variety online services and programs to support their instruction. These web-based resources are designed to help students learn, collaborate, research, and engage with content in multiple ways.
Students will be provided with GSuite for Education (Google) accounts with access to the suite of applications provided by Google including email, word processing, presentation, website creation, and spreadsheet tools. The Google account is also used to log in to other devices, such as Chromebooks, and other online educational applications. Student email accounts are limited to correspondence between district email accounts and addresses otherwise approved by the district.
Many of the other online educational services we utilize can be found on this web page, including more information on the products and links to their privacy policies. This list is updated regularly and parents should check back often for new approved resources.
DATA & PRIVACY
The District recognizes the need to protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in the education records of students. The District also works to safeguard and protect the confidentiality of students' educational records and personally identifiable information when collecting, retaining, disclosing and destroying student education records, in accordance with Board policy, state requirements, and federal and state law and regulations.
What is the Student Privacy Pledge?
The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) and The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) introduced a Student Privacy Pledge to safeguard student privacy regarding the collection, maintenance, and use of student personal information. The commitments are intended to concisely detail existing federal law and regulatory guidance regarding the collection and handling of student data, and to encourage service providers to more clearly articulate these practices.

GSuite for Education (Google)
Students in grades K-12 will be provided with GSuite for Education (Google Apps for Education) accounts with access to the suite of applications provided by Google, including email, word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet tools. The purpose of the account is to provide students with software for collaboration and learning through the use of technology. The suite of applications includes, but is not limited to: GMail, Google Docs, Google Sites, Google Sites, Google Groups, and Google Talk.
Your son or daughter will have access to this account, its applications, and email address both on and off campus. Upon request, you may also have access to this account.

Turnitin is an originality checking and plagiarism prevention service that checks your writing for citation mistakes or inappropriate copying. When students submit their papers, Turnitin compares it to text in its massive database of student work, websites, books, articles, etc.

PowerSchool is our District student information system (SIS). PowerSchool covers administrative needs, such as scheduling, attendance, state compliance reporting, data management, faculty management, emergency/medical and health management, and more. It is also used for techer gradebooks and online parent grade/progress report access (6-12th grades).

The District uses an online learning management system (LMS) called, “Canvas” by Instructure, Inc. Canvas is our online classroom for enhanced and virtual learning. All courses in 8-12th grades utilize Canvas to share course materials and engage in class discussions, file sharing, and online learning beyond the traditional school day.
This system is accessed using our domain’s (kasd.org and student.kasd.org) login credentials managed by the Google GSuite. Canvas is a closed, walled-garden system where only domain users can access our unique Canvas page and the courses therein. Canvas also communicated with our student information system, PowerSchool, to exchange roster and grade information between systems.
