February 2010

As we enter into the heart of the winter months, please be reminded of our inclement weather and emergency school closing/late start information. Please refer to  our Fall Newsletter posted on this web site under "District Newsletters." I will send ConnectEd phone calls to every household for which we have information informing you of our opening and closing status. Information will also be posted on regional and local television stations. If school is closed for the day, all evening activities are also cancelled for that day.

Please be reminded the District Administration Offices will be relocating to the former Maxatawny Elementary School as of February 22, 2010. All phone numbers will remain in effect as listed. The new mailing address is:

Kutztown Area School District
251 Long Lane
Kutztown, PA 19530

We continue to celebrate the many accolades already garnered by our students and staff for outstanding academic achievement, superior performances, and gracious community service.  Another outstanding showing by our middle school's Future City team, the high school girls' basketball teams first place standing, our winners at the PA Farm Show, the Science Olympiad winners, our district band, orchestra, and chorus participants, and multiple other  accolades continually serve as evidence that Kutztown is truly a special place where everyone has an opportunity to excel and grow.

We continue to promote 21st century learning skills and create compelling activities and assignments that ask students to create, innovate, problem-solve, and think at a high level. Meeting the intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of our students - educating the whole child, is our steadfast purpose. I strongly encourage all of our parents and guardians to become involved in the school-life of their children. Remain in constant contact with the schools, the staff members, and the administration. Through a strong partnership with the home we will certainly be "getting-results" in developing the potential of each child.

A major concept driving our continuous improvement model for our schools is the notion that we are preparing students for jobs and for a society that does not exist today. We are charged to teach children to become proficient with technologies that haven't been invented in order for them to solve problems that we do not know are problems yet. We are living in exponential times. With changes whirling all around us, the American school has stayed remarkably stagnant.  The world has changed in very fundamental ways, and we must continue to progress at an assertive rate.

Our collective commitment remains on continuous growth with an emphasis on learning to create the world of the future. As always, I invite you to contact me with suggestions and comments regarding the operation and programs within our school system.

Sincerely,
Robert R. Gross III
